BASKETEERS ASSISTING WOMEN IN NEW BEGINNINGS
If you had to leave your house in ten minutes and never come back, what would you grab?
Most would likely answer important documents or the bare necessities. A purse, perhaps. If you’ve children in tow, it’s likely the bulk of what you pack would be for their benefit.
Forget furniture, or most luxury items.
This is a crisis faced by many battered women who seek to escape to shelters. Rarely do they have time to pack properly, and often they find themselves at a shelter holding only what they can carry. When it comes time to leave the shelter and start life fresh, they often lack even the most basic of comforts.
This is where the Basketeers program comes in:
To most people, an empty laundry hamper is just that. But to “Basketeers', a laundry hamper represents Hope…hope for a woman leaving a shelter with few possessions, hope for women wanting a fresh start, a new life.
“Basketeers” feels by supporting women in the four shelters that we assist in York Region, we will help them find the strength to create new lives for themselves and their children, not return to their abuser, and by breaking the pattern, feel stronger for their children. That is why “Basketeers” was created. We are a generous group of around 3500 volunteers with large hearts.
By creating a “New Beginnings” basket either individually, as a family, a group of friends, or with business colleagues, it lets these women know someone out there cares enough about them to take the time and effort to create a themed basket especially for them. Unfortunately, they leave their homes without the bare necessities. You are giving them inspiration, hope and strength to start a new life and freedom from abuse.
Each each year, violence and abuse drives more than 100,000 Canadian women and children out of their homes and into shelters. This is why we are spreading the awareness about “Basketeers” and how you can help.
I was in awe over the sense of community in our area. It is phenomenal seeing the wrapped baskets, some with an inspirational message attached--it makes me feel proud of where I live. This is what life should be about, giving back to someone who has nothing. If people weren’t willing to step up, none of this would happen.
More than 10,000 women have received a “New Beginnings” basket since 2000, and we continue to grow. Last year alone, York Region donated 252 baskets.
Be part of this special day, bring your basket(s), stay for a while, enjoy some refreshments, visit with other Basketeers and meet representatives from our Region's four shelters. So mark your calendars and start spreading the word
