FREE Art Journalling Group for Body Image Issues and Disordered Eating
DATE & TIME: 6 Tuesdays, October 18th, 25th, November 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
This group will empower participants to use art activities as a way of addressing issues surrounding body image and disordered eating. One of the main take-away messages of this group is that in order to address, challenge, and change negative coping behaviours, one must introduce positive coping behaviours into one’s activity repertoire. Artistic activities can not only function as positive coping strategies in and of themselves, but they can also be used to directly address and challenge negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviours associated with body image issues and disordered eating.

Each week, participants will be encouraged to participate in a simple artistic activity that addresses a specific issue surrounding body image and/or disordered eating. Participants can either engage in the activity independently, with support from the OT facilitator, or in pairs or small groups. Afterwards, the group will discuss what it was like to do the activity and any feelings or thoughts that arose. Group participants will then be given art activities to complete for homework that week - these will be related to personal goals identified prior to the start of group. The beginning of the following week’s group will be used to check-in about the homework and the week in general.
Artistic experience and/or perceived artistic ability are not a requirement. This group will be a safe space for people to explore art as a medium of expression and healing.
Registration for this group will involve taking part in a short phone interview prior to the group beginning in order to identify goals and challenges.
