The Township of York was incorporated in 1850. In the 1920’s, York experienced much growth and development mainly due to its close proximity to the city of Toronto. In the following year, the township started to transition from that of a mainly rural, farming community to one that was much more urban in character. The southern part of York exploded and became more and more urban while the northern part of York developed at a much slower rate, keeping much of its original rural flavor.

In 1954, York joined with Toronto and became one of the municipalities that made up Metropolitan Toronto. In 1967, it became the borough of York and later, it became known as the City of York. In 1998, it was amalgamated into the City of Toronto and today, it is a wonderful multicultural district of the City of Toronto.
