Formally part of the Highland Creek community, the neighbourhood of West Hill came to be in the late 19 century after the opening of the West Hill post office by John Richardson.
Following improvements in road access to the neighbourhood, West Hill developed rapidly in the mid 20th century with many young families occupying the reasonably cheaper real estate.
In the 50s West Hill developed rapidly as a shopping district and by the 70s saw the construction of Morningside Mall.
By the turn of the century, however, the neighbourhood was in decline as the surrounding region developed quickly allowing access to better retail options.
Morning side mall was demolished in 2007 and replaced with Morningside Crossing Plaza.
Today West Hill is mostly occupied by older residents, small businesses and small scale highrises.
