Yorkville has a very interesting and unique history. Yorkville was founded in 1830 and it was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1883. As Yorkville grew, many large Victorian homes were built here and the streets were lined with lush trees and the neighbourhood filled with many pretty gardens.

In the 1960s, Yorkville became the center of the hippy culture of that time. Many young people visited the streets of Yorkville every day and they often filled the stoops that lined the streets. Many of Canada’s most famous musicians and writers of the time grew up frequenting this area. Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot and Margaret Atwood are but a few of these famous Canadians.

From the 70s onward, Yorkville started its gradual transition into the upscale neighbourhood that it is today. Real estate in this area started to increase greatly when the Bloor-Danforth subway line was built. Many high-end stores and corporations soon moved into the area as well as many wealthy residents. In 1985, the Bloor-Yorkville BIA was established here and today, Yorkville has become known as a neighbourhood to shop, eat and pamper yourself.
