2016 Terry Fox Run Wrap-Up
Together we kept it going for Terry!
Sunday, September 18th was a great day for the 36th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. Our 2016 Midland and Area Run was based at Perkinsfield Park and Arena. This community once again showed how much we care about each other and how we share our energy, time, talents, and money in support of those who need our help.
After the “Great Flood” on the 17th, we awoke to clear skies and mild temperatures on Sunday. The set-up of the site and route was done in record time due to the great support we received from both the Midland and Tiny Operations teams.
Our opening ceremony featured our municipal leaders, our MPP, and the announcement of Joshua Brunelle as our 2016 Flag-Bearer. After an emotional balloon-release by our Survivors and a high-energy warm-up, our 735 “runners” proceeded to walk, jog, glide, skate, or ride our new 5 or 10K routes. Did I mention 2 horses also trotted the course? Our Survivors were provided a ride on the course on our accessible bus to the mid-way point where they cheered on their supporters.
Our new site and route got lots of positive feedback. The new features we added this year were very well-received. The free Photo Booth provided pictures for over 150 folks. The Kid’s Zone was packed with face-painters and other budding artists. Our on-route singers led some impromptu dancing in the street. We dramatically expanded our Silent Auction this year and nearly doubled our income from this attraction over 2015. Apres-Run treats were a big hit, especially the popsicles.
We have over 100 organizations to thank for providing free goods or services to help promote and support this event. In addition, we must thank our Run-Day volunteers as well as police, OPP, EMS, and Ham Radio operators, for their time and support. Our organizing committee worked for many hours over many months to make these 3 hours shine. What a caring and generous community we live in!
While donations continue to come in, we are confident that together, we raised $65-70K for cancer research! While you can no longer participate in the 2016 Run, you can continue to donate at www.terryfox.org (choose Midland and Area – Site 103).
Thank you all very much, and we hope to have you with us again next year as we strive to outrun cancer together….it’s up to us.
