Until the early 1900s, The Beaches was a wooded, swampy area only sparsely dotted with a few private homes. The Toronto Harbour Commission appropriated it in the early 1900s and it was then that development of this area truly started. In the 1930s, wooden groynes were added to the shoreline in order to artificially enlarge both the shoreline and the beach area. Several amusement parks, those of Woodbine, Kew Gardens, Scarboro, Balmy Beach and Victoria Park, were also built in the area. Furthermore, as Toronto continued to expand eastward, The Beaches was subdivided and many new residential homes were built there.

Today, The Beaches is one of Toronto’s most popular and beautiful areas in which to live.
