Tanks Roll in Oshawa to Remember the Gulf War

Posted on Jun 13, 2016 by Samuel Richardson

This previous weekend, on June 11, the Ontario Regiment Museum conducted the show of a lifetime to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Gulf War.

As part of its Tank Saturday show on Saturday, June 11, the Ontario Regiment Museum, nestled on Stevenson Road North on the south field of the Oshawa Airport, rolled out an impressive and thrilling collection of Gulf War vehicles to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the conflict. Vehicles in the lineup included British combat vehicles for reconnaissance, tracked ("CVRTs"); an American Humvee, and a British Land Rover. The show was rounded off with a demonstration of the monstrous M60 Patton main battle tank, followed by a live fire demonstration by the Humvee and CVRTs.

The Ontario Regiment Museum is located at 1000 Stevenson Road North, and is located on Oshawa Airport's south field. For years, it has prided itself on maintaining and restoring the largest collection of operational armoured vehicles in Canada, and is honoured and proud to perpetuate the legacies of Canadian soldiers and their allies around the world by making history come to life.

Visitors also have the brand new opportunity of purchasing rides in some of the Museum's vehicles, which some did in advance of the June 11th Tank Saturday. The riders have since stated it was an "experience well worthwhile and like no other." Visitors have also enjoyed experiencing the sounds, feeling and the smell of these armoured vehicles as they roared to life and thundered down the track. For an example of the show's June 11 lineup, see the attached Tank Saturday documentary short film, courtesy of Paul Williams and Dodger Productions.

The Ontario Regiment Museum will be hosting future Tank Saturdays on July 9, August 13, September 10, and October 15. Demonstrations run twice a day at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and admission is simply $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per child. The Museum is otherwise open from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM seven days a week, and is always thrilled to welcome new and returning visitors. The Museum can also be found on Facebook and YouTube, as well as on Twitter and Instagram at @ontrmuseum.
