Historically, the town of Oakville was relatively small. In its early years, its main industries were shipbuilding, timber shipment, and wheat farming. Slowly, throughout the early 1900s, new industry started to move to Oakville including Shell Canada Oil Refineries as well as the Ford Motor Company. These new industries helped Oakville to grow and in 1962, the town of Oakville merged with the neighbouring villages of Bronte, Sheridan, Palermo and the Trafalgar Township.

Since then, Oakville has grown tremendously and is a much sought after place to live. Today, Oakville is divided in to the "Old Oakville" and the "New Oakville". The "Old Oakville" is located along the beautiful banks of Lake Ontario while the "New Oakville" is a budding area for many new housing developments.
