North York started out as a small agricultural community. It grew quickly however and in 1922, the Township of North York was formed in order to accommodate its rapidly growing population.

In the 1950’s, North York really started to boom. Post-World War II, its population grew exponentially as many veterans and baby boomers started moving to North York. By the late 1950’s and 60’s, North York had changed dramatically from the small agricultural community that it once was into a booming suburb of Toronto. In order to accommodate such rapid change and growth, North York became the Borough of North York in 1967. Just over a decade later, in 1979, the City of North York was formed. Known as “the City with Heart”, North York continued to grow and it became the second largest of the municipalities that made up Metropolitan Toronto. In 1998, North York amalgamated into the City of Toronto.
