The film Unlocking the Cage will be presented at The Screening Room Sunday, October 23 at 4 and 7 p.m. to raise money for the Fauna Sanctuary, Canada's only chimpanzee sanctuary. Unlocking the Cage follows animal rights lawyer Steven Wise in his effort to break down the legal wall separating animals from humans. After 30 years of struggling with ineffective animal welfare laws, Steve and his Nonhuman Rights Project team have filed the first lawsuits seeking to transform animals from things with no rights to persons with legal protections. Fauna Sanctuary houses 12 chimps, including some from the now defunct LEMSIP (Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates). Set in Quebec’s Monteregie region, about 20 minutes from Montreal, Fauna is also home to about 80 rescued farm, domestic and exotic animals. Admission is $10.
