PAIR OF CARDINALS NAMED TO IBL ALL-STAR TEAM

Posted on Jun 18, 2016 by Mike Marasco

The Intercounty Baseball League has released the names of the 2016 IBL All-Star team that will face the Canadian National Junior Team on Saturday July 2nd in Barrie at Coates Stadium. Of the roster, two Hamilton Cardinals have been named to the team including Tyler Hardie and Dre Celestijn.

Hardie, a 20-year old catcher, has been a mainstay behind the plate for the Cardinals all season. In 14 games this season Hardie has gone 22-for-55 at the plate for .400 batting average. Of his 22 hits he has collected three doubles, a triple and a home run. Going into Friday night’s game, Hardie has only struck out once this season.

Celestijn, a 24-year old outfielder from Willemstad, Curaco, is in his fourth season with the Cardinal. In seven games he has a .571 batting average with four doubles and three triples. Celestijn’s speed is a key aspect of his game weather it is on the base paths or in right field.

The two Hamilton Cardinals players will be joined by players from the other six IBL teams when they face the National Junior Team. The Junior National Team is made up of some of the best high school aged (18 and under) baseball players in Canada. Two weeks ago during the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Junior National Team players were selected including catcher Andrew Yerzy (Toronto, ON) to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2nd Round (52nd overall), right handed pitcher Jordan Balazovic (Mississauga, ON) to the Minnesota Twins in the 5th Round (153rd overall) and outfielder Clayton Keyes (Calgary, AB) to the Toronto Blue Jays in the 17th Round (522nd overall).

The 2016 IBL All-Star game in Barrie kicks off at 2:00pm on July 2nd. For more information about the All-Star Game visit www.theibl.ca.

The next game for Hamilton is tonight at 7:30pm when the London Majors visit Bernie Arbour Stadium.
