LATE ERRORS COST CARDINALS

Posted on Jun 18, 2017 by Mike Marasco

Hamilton finally got to play a home game at Bernie Arbour on Friday night when they hosted the Kitchener Panthers. Dan Weagle made his season debut for the Cardinals on the mound and kept the Panthers bats from being dominant even though he took the loss. Nate Mastervick continued his hots streak at the plate going two-for-four with a pair of RBIs. However, Kitchener left the park with an 11-4 win in part due to three costly Hamilton errors in the seventh inning.

It took until the third inning before the first run of the game crossed the plate. Tanner Nivins opened the inning with a walk for the Panthers and moved to third on a single by Yorbis Borroto. Colin Gordner loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Sean Reilly and Justin Interisano would then hit back to back sacrifice flies to score two runs.

Hamilton picked up a run in their half of the third to cut the Kitchener lead by one. Greg Marco led off with a single and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Mastervick would later hit a two out single to right to bring in Marco and make it a 2-1 game.

Mastervick would tie the game up in the fifth inning when he doubled to cash Chris Beer, who had walked to open the inning.

Kitchener regained the lead the next half inning on a Santino Silvestri single. In the seventh the wheels fell off for the Cardinals when they committed three errors which helped to allow the Panthers to score six times in the frame and take a 9-2 lead.

Each team would plate a pair of runs in the eighth to cap off the scoring in the game. Connor Bowie had an RBI triple for the Cardinals while Jon Saporsantos singled to score Bowie.

For Hamilton, Weagle took the loss going five and two-thirds innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one. Slater Frith relieved Weagle in the sixth and got the final out of the inning but then allowed six unearned runs in the seventh on two hits and a walk. Chris Lazar then made his season debut, throwing two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Darek Bishop pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit.

For the Panthers, Noelvis Entenza when five innings for the win, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three batters and striking out eight. Daniel Procopio came in to pitch two innings, allowing a single walk and striking out five. Ryan Giberson would pitch an inning, allowing two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out one. Phil Owen finished off the game getting three fly ball outs.

Hamilton will now head to Guelph for a Saturday double header starting at 2:00 PM at Hastings Stadium. The team returns to Bernie Arbour on Sunday to host the Brantford Red Sox also starting at 2:00 PM.

Prior to the game the teams held a moment of silence for longtime fan Bruce Macdonald, former player Mark McDonald and IBL umpire David Lavorato who all passed away during the offseason.

The Hamilton Cardinals and Buffalo Wild Wings are teaming up to raise funds for the Special Olympics Hamilton Softball team.
