HAMILTON SHUTOUT BY HERD
Hamilton and Burlington finally took to the field to play a game without Mother Nature rearing her head as the teams faced off at Bernie Arbour in IBL action on Friday night. The Herd took advantage of the Cardinals’ short bench on this night, scoring seven times including three solo home runs. For Hamilton, Cal Murphy led at the plate, going two for four, and in the field. The loss drops the Cardinals record to 2-8, a full game behind the Herd who are in fifth place.
Justin Gideon led off the game for Burlington, taking the third pitch of the game for a solo home run to give his team an early 1-0 lead. That would all they would need but the Herd would add single runs on solo home runs from John Whaley, in the fourth, and a second solo home run by Gideon in the seventh. Burlington also added a pair of runs in the third and single runs in each of the fifth and ninth innings.
The Cardinals looked to have broken up the shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth when, with a runner on first, Murphy ripped a shot to right field that had the runner crossing the plate. However, the ball rolled under the fence and was ruled a ground rule double that put the runner back on third.
The score could have been worse by Murphy made a couple of great defensive plays while Nate Mastervick made some outstanding catches in centre field.
For Hamilton, Dan Weagle took the loss going six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out one. Jackson Jones pitched the final three innings allowing two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out four.
For the Herd, former Cardinals pitcher Adam Prashad picked up the win after throwing eight innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits, a walk and striking out ten batters. Branden Kuzyk pitched the ninth inning, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two.
Hamilton will take Saturday off to regroup before facing the Guelph Royals at Bernie Arbour on Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00 PM.
