Greektown
Greektown is a predominantly Greek neighbourhood in east Toronto that is also often referred to as The Danforth. Greektown runs along Danforth Avenue between Chester Avenue and Dewhurst Boulevard. It is an area where a lot of the first Greek immigrants settled in the early 1900’s and it is now an area full of lively Greek restaurants and shops. Today, Greektown claims to have one of the highest concentrations of restaurants per kilometer in the world.
Every August, this neighbourhood hosts its annual Taste of the Danforth festival. This festival is perhaps what this neighbourhood is most famous for and it is a food festival that attracts people from all over the GTA. There are games, rides, sports and music. All of the restaurants that line the Danforth set up stands to sell their delicious food samples. The first Taste of the Danforth was held in 1994 and it had only 5,000 visitors. Today, this event is so popular that over one million people descend on the Danforth every summer for this wonderful weekend festival.
