Tomato Capital of Canada

Essex County is Canada’s southernmost county, and as a result it boasts some of the warmest summer weather in Canada. Its favourable climate also makes it an agricultural hub, illustrated by the town of Leamington being known as the “Tomato capital of Canada.” Essex County has the largest concentration of greenhouses in North America.
Essex County’s biggest community is Windsor, which sits on the southern shore of the Detroit River. Detroit, Michigan lies on the other side of the river, which is the boundary between Canada and the United States. Due to Windsor’s proximity to Detroit, it is a major contributor to Canada’s automotive industry.
Tourism is a well-established industry in Windsor, featuring such attractions as an extensive riverfront parks system, as well as Caesars Windsor, one of the largest casinos in Canada.
Pelee Island also offers fishing, hiking, camping, and more.
Essex County is also home to the University of Windsor and St. Clair College.
