The Durham Region
The Durham region is a district of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Southern Ontario, Canada. The Durham region is east of the City of Toronto and its southern border runs along the shores of Lake Ontario. There are eight municipalities that make up the Durham region: Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. The southern municipalities of the Durham region are very urban and they are located in an area of Ontario that is often referred to as "The Golden Horseshoe". This area is an area of southern Ontario that has experienced much economic growth and immigration over the last few decades. In contrast, the northern municipalities of the Durham region are much more rural. The northern municipalities are know as havens for nature lovers, mostly due to the Oak Ridges Moraine that runs through this area but also due to the many recreational trails, small lakes and small towns that this area has to explore.
