World Poutine Eating Championship crowns new top eater
Smoke’s Poutinerie hosted its 6th Annual World Poutine Eating Championship on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Yonge-Dundas Square.
FREE poutine was served to the thousands that attended the event. There was a Pro & Amateur eat-off, Kiss cover band, kids zone, 80's hair stylists, a beer garden, interactive games & 1000's of prizes.
Defending champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, ranked No. 1 was defeated and lost his title to Matt "The Megatoad" Stonie. Both San Jose, Calif. natives, the men went head to head for 10 minutes, but it was in the last few moments where Stonie, weighing a mere 130 lbs., pushed ahead and consumed 14 3/4 lbs. — three pounds more than Chestnut. He won a trophy and $3,000.
The competition itself is the 2nd largest professional eating competition in the world, putting Canada on the map with the home grown company. Smoke's Poutine is well know on Queen Street West, as the place to go for late night food after a night of drinking and dancing in the downtown area. An article that was posted in the Globe and Mail even declares "If poutine's your thing, get thee to Smoke's".
