Little Portugal is a community of Toronto in which many Portuguese people settled in the mid-1900s. Many small, two storey family homes were built in this area in the mid-1900s to accommodate this influx of Portuguese immigrants to the area. Many of these new Portuguese immigrants also opened businesses here thus lending this area its Portuguese character.
The area of Little Portugal that is west of Dufferin Street was once a part of the town of Brocton. The area of Little Portugal that is east of Dufferin Street and south of Dundas Street West is often referred to as Beaconsfield Village. In 2007, the Little Portugal Business Improvement Area was created for the businesses that run along Dundas Street West from Dufferin to Ossington.
