Central Ontario
The perfect summer getaway, Cottage Country as it is often referred to, Central Ontario benefits from a picturesque collection of lakes, rivers, beaches, rolling farm lands and small town communities. The major cottage country regions include the Parry Sound-Muskoka-Haliburton region, Kawartha Lakes and Bancroft and Northern Hastings County.
To the North lies the Southern border of the Canadian Shield which includes Algonquin Provincial Park, a popular recreational destination throughout the year. The oldest provincial park in Canada, its current size is just over 7,600 square kilometres (about one and half times the size of Prince Edward Island). It is home to over 2,400 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of rivers and streams. Including the 1,200 campsites, the park includes fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing and day hiking.
Many of the lakes and waterways are lined with cottages, some seasonal, however in recent years a retiring baby boom population, increasing recreational and local services as well improved wireless connection have made parts of the cottage region year round residences.
