Breaking the Silence: Systemic Racism (A Panel Discussion)
On July 28th, Youth Troopers for Global Awareness (YTGA), launched it's newest panel discussion series - Breaking the Silence - at Studio.89. The series aims to bring light to various social justice issues happening within the Region of Peel, GTA and across the globe. By opening ourselves up to conversations around these issues, we are able to better understand why and how we got to where we are. More importantly, we're able to collectively decide on how we can mobilize and empower ourselves to take action.
Systemic Racialized Discrimination was the focus of the night, whereby citizens, researchers, experts and advocates came together to share stories of their lived experience and the work they are doing now. Panelists included members of Towards Social Justice, Peel Coalition Against Racialized Discrimination (P-CARD), Showing Up For Social Justice, Colour of Poverty - Colour of Change, and the Association of Black Law Enforcers.
While much was discussed, the key take-aways we, as a united community, walked away with included:
- connecting with agencies/organizations like Towards Social Justice, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), and Colour of Poverty - Colour of Change to learn what action they are taking
- forwarding info on meetings, discussions and hearings to Studio.89 so it ca be shared with the broader community
- making your voice heard by writing to your local politicians & decision makers
- using your privilege/position to stop racism in it's tracks when you see it happening
The next BTS is in the works, with Youth Homelessness being the topic of discussion. Follow Studio.89 & YTGA on social media to stay in the loop of event dates & times!
Powerful speakers. Powerful stories. Powerful energies.
To all of our panelists and guests - thank you for breaking the silence.
