Come and be inspired by music written by women composers and/or wordsmiths, in recognition of International Women's Day (which happened on March 8th). Voices Chamber Choir recently performed these pieces at Roy Thomson Hall as part of their Annual Free Noon Hour Choir and Organ Series (on February 24th, 2023). This part of the concert features music written by women composers including Ruth Watson Henderson ("O Holy Spirit, By Whose Breath") and Rita MacNeil ("Home I'll Be") plus poetry and lyrics featuring Emily Dickinson ("'Hope' is the thing with feathers" by Sarah Quartel) and Maya Angelou ("Maya's Prayer for Peace" by Tom Trenney).
The Reflections concert opens with choral music written in the Renaissance and Baroque eras for the Lenten season. Works include "Ave Verum Corpus" by English Renaissance composer William Byrd, as well as pieces by Italian Renaissance composers Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina ("Sicut Cervus"), Claudio Monteverdi ("Adoramus Te") and Italian Baroque composers Antonio Caldara ("Stabat Mater") and Antonio Lotti ("Crucifixus a 8") plus other selections. Enjoy these masterpieces for the choral repertoire, and allow yourself time to reflect during this time of the year.
The concert is being held at St. Martin's in-the Fields Anglican Church (383 Glenlake Avenue) in Toronto on Saturday, March 25th, 2023 at 8:00 pm. Ticket prices are $20.00 for adults, and $15.00 for students/seniors. Tickets are available at the door (cash only please).
